On Theory and Method 2: Architects in Formation

The role of the architect seems to be constantly renegotiated, due to social change and technological development. However, in spite of the proliferation of architectural research, architectural knowledge may still be grounded in design experience and cultural values transmitted during the early years of an architect’s training. Furthermore, most scholarly studies on architectural practice and education have been
focused on earlier periods, on the École des Beaux-Arts and the Bauhaus, often aimed at legitimating rather than critically examining the profession. Thus, critical studies of contemporary models of practice and education are urgently needed today, and this workshop seminar will situate the formation of architects in relation to social theories and methodologies, raised from the 1960s onwards.

International guests are Associate Dean Helena Webster, Oxford Brookes University, and Associate Professor Silke Steets, Technische Universität Darmstadt. Helena Webster’s presentation will deal with theory and methodology in relation to her book, Bourdieu for Architects, published by Routledge in 2011. Silke Steets will present theory and methodology on the social construction of architecture, elaborated in her habilitation thesis, to be published in 2015.

The program begins late afternoon on Thursday, February 5, with an open event: From 4 pm onwards there will be an opportunity to visit the new Architecture school, which is being constructed at the KTH Campus, and the new learning environment will be a possible topic for discussion during the following dinner. Next day, Friday, February 6, the actual seminar will take place between 9 am and 4.30 pm. Lunch, as well as tea and coffee, will be served in connection to the workshop venue. Researchers are welcome to register or to send in abstracts discussing the theoretical framework and methodology used in on-going research, related to the formation of architects.

Registrations or abstracts (100–200 words) should be submitted by January 7, 2015, to Anders Bergström, anders.bergstrom(@)arch.kth.se
